| AUTO EXPO 2000, the
largest Asian automotive show, organised by CII,
SIAM AND ACMA, at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi was
inaugurated by Mr Murasoli Maran, Union Minister
of commerce and Industry while the Auto Enterprise
2000 (a concurrent show ) was inaugurated by Ms
Vasundhara Raje, Minister of State for Small Scale
Industries and Agro and Rural Industries. The
Expo, covered 65,000 sqm of space,through 18 halls
with 20 participating countries -Argentina, Belarus,
Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India,
Italy, Japan Korea

Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore,Spain, Sweden, Switzerland,
The Netherlands, United Arb Emirates, United Kingdom
and the United States. Of these five were first timers
and five had country pavilions.
Over 1000 auto component and ancillary
companies and 27 vehicle manufacturers exhibited.
Landmarks setting AUTO EXPO 2000 apart:
1) 25 new vehicles/models launched (2) many new auto
launched by component manufacturers- Remsons Ltd, Sundaram-Clayton
Ltd, Mutual Mecaplast Ltd and Clutch Auto Ltd, while
Visteon, Delphi and many others exhibited complete systems
for the first time (3) more than 1 million visitors
estimated -much of the increase was business visitors
(4) Green Pavilion environmental focus affirmed that
the automotive industry was leading the charge towards
improved environment (5) Auto Enterprise had grown and
spread across three halls (6) 'Park & Ride', hugely
successful (7) Cyber Café offering facilities
of exhibitors (8) Remote control car race and (9) Painting
competition for children.

Of the four Seminars two were conducted by SIAM
-Latest Trends in Automotive Technologies; Asian
Two Wheeler Congress and two by ACMA - Auto Component
Supply Chain: Linking Big to Small and Combating
the Cancer of Counterfeit Auto Parts.

Delegations were from -Federation of
Asian Motorcycle Industries (FAMI), China Association
of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), Federation of Automobile
Dealers' Association (FADA), Federation of All India
Spare Parts Dealers Association (FAISPDA), Society of
Automobile Engineers (SAE). Other delegates came from
Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia,
Iran, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Pakistan,
Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Tanzania,
UAE, UK and USA, including Ford Motor Co., Toyota and
the German-IGEP delegation which opened a new chapter
in Indo-Germany trade relations with joint ventures
and also strategic alliances for the manufacture of
replacement parts.
12 January 2000 at Maurya Sheraton
& Towers, New Delhi, the FORD Global Sourcing Team
and delegates were welcomed by ACMA President Mr V K
Mehta while Vice President Mr L Ganesh presented the
Indian Automotive Industry. Mr Richard Sutton, Director
Purchasing, Asia Pacific Operations and Associations
made a detailed presentation which affirmed Ford as
the largest truck manufacturer and 2nd largest car maker,
operating in 38 countries. Explaining Ford's purchasing
overview, he said the goal was to achieve the Company's
vision of providing value to consumers by sourcing (a)
highest quality items (b) latest technology valued by
customers (c) at the lowest possible cost. One important
factor of Ford's Supplier relationship was "think
value not just price". Supplier expectations were
in areas of Cost Quality, Technology and Delivery.
Following the meeting Ford confirmed
support of Ford Detroit in organising a CEOs Delegation
of USA in June 2000, including visits to key component
suppliers.
There were other sector specific seminars
held by the Exhibitors during the course of the Fair.
Opening remarks-
Mr Rahul Bajaj, President CII: Auto
Expo, result of long standing and strong partnership
between ACMA, SIAM and CII.
Mr. Venu Srinivasan, President, SIAM
: Indian Automobile Industry changed rapidly and industry
had made huge investments. Results to be seen in Asia's
biggest auto show.
Mr V K Mehta, President ACMA: auto
component sector accounted for over 50% of the Fair
space, displayed technology, design, quality commensurate
with the rapid changes in the automobile industry.
Mr Manohar Joshi, Minister of Industry
(Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises) in his Valedictory
Address suggested industry draw on resources available
in the many engineering and technical Institutes of
the country.
Mr Pran Talwar announced that the Sixth
AUTO EXPO would be held from 15-21 January 2002 at New
Delhi and the focus would be on cleaner technologies. |
