ACMA (ER) AND ACT SEMINAR ON QUALITY &
BENCHMARKING: 24TH NOVEMBER '99

ACMA (ER) implemented its work-plan for 1999-2000
with a Seminar on Quality & Benchmarking at
the Russi Mody Centre for Excellence, Jamshedpur,
jointly organised with ACMA Centre for Technology
(ACT).
Presentations on QS 9000 were made by Mr Dhaval
Gat of Tata Cummins Ltd and Mr B B Gupta of UL
India Pvt Ltd while Benchmarking was done by Mr
Klaus Goehring, ACT.

Welcoming participants and speakers,
Mr B K Bose, General Manager Tata Cummins Ltd, said
"Quality" was the primary rule for survivial
of the fittest while achieving a certificate was the
first positive step, towards this. Tata Cummins was
working on "Six Sigma" and "TPM"
for continuous improvement and waste elimination which
was essential. Presentations on Quality laid stress
on the various aspects of QS 9000, highlighting team
spirit, integrity, implementation of quality policy
from the top, management responsibility, information
sharing, team commitment feasibility, etc.
| Mr. Klaus Goehring, presenting
Benchmarking, stressed the benefits of Gap Analysis
and how companies could interpret results in order
to bridge the gaps, with the help of Experts. Mr.
Bose supporting Benchmarking said it was an important
process and companies would gain advantage through
"Gap Analysis" vis-à-vis world
practices. Remarking on the initiatives taken by
ACMA, he suggested participants make the most of
opportunities offered.

The programme was well attended and
appreciated and participants requested a more detailed
session, if possible, on these subjects,.

MEETING WITH THE ACMA PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT:

The ACMA (WR) office, in full swing with meetings
conducted in its spacious conference room had
Mrs Pilloo C Aga, chairperson ACMA (WR) introduce
Western Region members to the ACMA President,
Mr V K Mehta and Vice president Mr L Ganesh.A
presentation was done on ACMA (WR) activities
for the period 1998-99 and on the work-plan for
1999-2000. Members were asked for suggestions
to the work-plan with a special request for their
support to the Association programmes.

Mrs Aga ended on the upbeat note of
ACMA (WR) taking programmes to the smaller towns of
Nasik, Rajkot, Indore etc. and also, concentrating on
increasing membership from these areas.
The President and Vice President spoke
on issues concerning the membership at large - the present
statues of the industry, survivial strategies to be
planned and the impact of WTO. Mr Mehta stressed the
need to gear up for competition with foreign companies
having global capacities and setting up shop in India.
He, also, requested members to broaden their export
market, thus strengthening the competition by Indian
auto component companies.
In closing Mr Mehta said, ACMA had
urged the Commerce Ministry to increase the ambit of
the "Research and Development" category and
extend subsidised funding towards investing in new products
measuring up to quality controls and world-best practices.
This proposal for 'development funding', if accepted,
would give price advantage to Indian component manufacturers.
SHARING OF EXPERIENCE-TOTAL
QUALITY MANAGEMENT: 13 DECEMBER 2000
ACMA (WR) -successful Seminar on "Sharing
of Experience: TQM" with 40+ participants.
Mrs Pilloo C Aga, Chairperson Western
Region: extended welcome to Delegates and Speakers;
stated ACMA's pride in members like Shriram Pistons
& Rings and Ramon & Demm for their readiness
to Share their Experiences for the benefit of other
members; stressed that an increasingly competitive and
customer focused world placed quality movement at centre
stage of an organization with TQM as its important ingredient.
Presentations by Shriram Pistons &
Rings Ltd, New Delhi: Mr K.N. Rattan, Executive Director
(Works) gave a brief on his company practicing TQM which
had won for it the ACMA Quality Award, MUL Best Vendor
Award, self certified vendor status from OEMs and direct
line status from Hero Honda Ltd and worked with OEMs
from product conceptualisation, technology to prototype
development. Mr K S Satyanarayana, Chief of QA illustrated
the thrust areas of quality improvement and role of
Quality Assurance in TQM.
Presentations by Ramon & Demm (Eicher
Unit): Mr Rajesh Mittel DGM (Mgf) and Mr S S Gill, Manager
(QA) presenting the Company profile said, Eicher's philosophy
and focused approach turned the sick Unit with accumulated
losses of Rs. 27 corers to a growth of 89% per year.
Its cellular system of manufacturing had won the National
Productivity Award. Total credit to Total Quality Management
was given for the company's quality movement and benefit
accrued thereof.
