VISIT TO VISTEON INDIA, EMVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (ISO-14001): MARAIMALAI NAGAR, 29 NOVEMBER 2000

A 30 member delegation visited Visteon India. It is the very first Auto Component unit, in India, to get the ISO-14001 certification. The focus of the visit was to bring first-hand exposure on the Environment Management System-ISO 14001, to members of the Delegation.

At Visteon, presentations were made, starting with an Introduction to ISO-14001 and on to Elements and Implementation of ISO-14001. During the Plant visit, members were exposed to the excellent Environment Management System and the stringent safety measures adopted by the Company. The System as well as the knowledge of the Faculty on the subject was very impressive and requests were made by Participants for more programmes on ISO 14001.

SEMINAR ON IMPLEMENTATION OF ISO 14001: CHENNAI, 28 DECEMBER 2000

In less than a month, responding to the request of Membership, a second programme on Environment Management System, was organised-this time on the "Implementation of ISO 14001". Once again the faculty was Mr Anil Kaul, Mr. Vairavan, and Mr. Pandey from Visteon India, whose commitment to and knowledge of the subject (as mentioned earlier) enthused enough members to pack, not only a "full house" but also lament that it was not a full day programme.

Visteon India has been more than generous in sharing their success stories and experience with the ACMA Membership.

WORKSHOP ON POKA-YOKE: 10th JANUARY 2001, CHENNAI

"Poka-Yoke" translates into Human Error Prevention and aims at simple and practical methods to eliminate defects and errors in operation, which is usually owing to human error or carelessness. Many of these errors are due, not only, to attitudenal behaviour but also often because the mind has not been applied to ‘provide’, ‘make’, ‘modify’ arrangement to eliminate these errors, thereby sustaining zero customer complaint.

To give more insight on the subject, the Southern Region Office organised a Workshop on Poka-Yoke which received overwhelming response and many last minute delegates had to be disappointed, in view of limited seats. We would wish to inform that further programmes on the subject will be organised in Chennai and other Centres of the Southern Region, giving another opportunity to those who "missed the bus" earlier, to attend subsequent Workshops. A second in the series has already been organised in Bangalore on 24th January 2001.

The programme was conducted by Mr. D Manivannan, Sr. Manager-TPM, Sundaram Clayton Ltd, who shared his company’s experience in attempting to bring about a new thought process, necessary for a successful introduction of ‘Poka-Yoke" which would rapidly eliminate customer complaints and internal failures.

In his inaugural address, Mr. C Narasimhan, Chairman ACMA (SR), mentioned that the customers, particularly after the entry of global majors in the field, have become very discerning in terms of quality, cost and delivery (Quality = zero defects; Cost = reduction of 5% every year; and Delivery = on time, every time). With competition from all quarters, mistakes would be more than just costly but could be avoided through Poka-Yoke thus doing away with rejections and complaints.
