SEMINAR ON TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT & TOTAL PRODUCTIVE MAINTENANCE :
28 SEPTEMBER '99

Mr. S Srinivasan of Sundram Fasteners Ltd : Presentation on TPM

ACMA (SR) has been spinning with action, these last few years, with special focus in the areas of Quality, Productivity and Exports. Keeping to this National Agenda, ACMA (SR) held a one-day seminar on TQM & TPM, in Chennai on 28th September, 1999.

The Seminar was a resounding success with 60 participants from Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mysore, Cochin, Pondicherry and even from the North - Delhi. Mr C Narasimhan, Chairman ACMA (SR) was delighted with a "full-house" particularly as, he said, this reflected the quality consciousness of the auto component industry.

In his inaugural speech, Mr Narasimhan stressed that while Quality and Delivery was imperative, Cost Reduction was constantly being demanded by customers and only the toughest and fittest of Entrepreneurs would survive. There was urgent need for all to cut costs and be more innovative. By adopting various methods and practices such as TQM & TPM, which were powerful concepts, companies would pave the way to structural improvement, for TQM aimed at continuous improvement of an Organisation through Total Employees Involvement (TEI) and TPM created a corporate system, to utilise to the maximum, the efficiency of machines that would ensure Zero accident, Zero break-down and Zero defect.

Sundaram-Clayton Ltd - winner of the Deming Prize instituted by the Union of Japanese Scientists & Engineers (JUSE) Japan, 39 years ago - made a presentation on TQM which was ably conducted by Mr K N Radhakrishnan, GM (Business Planning & TQC) taking the participants through the various turns and twists in the Company's journey to Total Quality Management.

The Company can boast of being the only auto component manufacturer to have received this award, after a 3 year training period under JIPM Instructors which ensured 'cost savings and enhanced export capabilities'.

Rounding off the Seminar, was a visit to Sundram Fasteners Ltd, giving the participants a first hand experience of a world class Company. For the first time, members present, were asked to sum-up their view of the Seminar and plant visit - the unanimous agreement was that" 'not possible in India' was a myth and we can do it with determination, hard work and putting systems in place".
