PROGRAMME ON "CORROSION PREVENTION" :
19 FEBRUARY 2002, NEW DELHI

Industry, and an important sector is the automotive industry, needs to beat the corrosion problem with regard to most products.

Dr. Efim Y Lyublinski, world renowned expert on Corrosion Protection Methods and Director, Field Technical Support, Northern Technologies International Corporation, presented a paper at the International corrosion Congress held in India.

"Grabbing" the opportune moment, ACMA (NR) arranged a programme in the ACMA Pran Talwar Boardroom, for the Professor to speak on the subject. Also, present was the Professor's colleague Mr Ronnie Singh, Sales Engineer Industrial Packaging Technology, as well as, Mr. N Sriram, General Manager, Harita NTI Ltd.

The Presentation on the application of Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI) for preserving components through the use of environment friendly products, brings ready-to-use products to the User's end. Certain features of the VCI packaging material:

a) Protects ferrous/non-ferrous metal and their alloys
b) To be used on dry & oil free surface/products
c) May be used on any size/shape of components/engines/surface
d) Reusable, recyclable but not biodegradable approved by major international OEMs
e) Shelf live 2 years; Service life 5 years
f) Cost effective : cheap material used for VCI

Dr. Lyublinski believes that out of a 1000 ways, only 4-5 methods of protection were in use. For products requiring more than 5 years protection, a different combination of VCI inhibitors, gases and desiccants were used.

Several points surfaced during Question-Answer session:

a) dies could be protected with VCI poly bags when not in use

b) kerosene not to be used for cleaning as dirt was not totally removed; chloride remained and small invisible holes were left on the surface of the item

c) good idea to use VCI for component movement, particularly, for exports as this takes longer to reach the destination.

The 20 participants joined in lively interaction. Excellent feedback was received with suggestions, of more such awareness and informative programmes.

OEM INTERACTION - VISIT TO SWARAJ ENGINES LTD & PUNJAB TRACTORS LTD :
22 FEBRUARY 2002, MOHALI

ACMA (NR) working towards completing its Work Plan and OEM interaction, accompanied 27 CEOs and middle Management Personnel to Swaraj Engines Ltd & Punjab Tractors Ltd. Vice President, Mr Deep Kapuria, also, joined the delegation.

SWARAJ ENGINES
The first of the two-stop visit was Swaraj Engines Ltd. This was a maiden visit to the Plant where the technology for the engines was from KOEL, a partner in Swaraj Engines Ltd. The manufacturing capacity of the Plant was 36,000 per annum, in two shifts with a total workforce of 600. Currently, the Plant produced 24,000 engines a year.

Following points were worth a mention :

Swaraj Engines had implemented Low Cost Automation through gravity operated conveyor    belts. Productivity of the work force was very high
well planned lay-out-cell manufacturing
the overall cleanliness of the plant and natural lighting was very good
maintenance of machines was mainly in-house with concentration on preventive maintenance
shifting focus from in-house manufacturing to out-sourcing of components
the Company has started working towards meeting the engine emission norms by 2005.

The following personnel were present at the interaction:

Mr G S Rihal, Managing Director
Mr Gopal Sharma, Vice President Works
Mr P D Joshi, General Manager Material Services
Mr Avtar Singh, Chief Manager Production
