JAMSHEDPUR 18, 2000
|
|
With the WTO norms looming
before the industry, the topic "Value Engineering
& Cost Control" was an interesting and
apt choice for the Eastern Region Chairperson,
Mr. Beni Daga, to focus on.
Thanking Mr. K.N. Rattan (Executive Director,
Shriram Pistons & Rings Ltd), Mr. P. Arora
(Shriram Pistons & Rings Ltd) and Mr. S.K.
Behera (Jt Managing Director, International
Auto), Mr. Daga made special mention of the
fact that Mr. Rattan and Mr. Arora had traveled
from Delhiparticularly, to make the presentation
on their experience of value Engineering.

Further, Mr. Daga said, to the present
cut-throat competitive environment which demanded continuous
improvement in terms of quality and productivity and
regular decrease in costs. The reason? Not just WTO
but new entrants to the industry, as well.
The Beginning of Value Engineering
Known as Function Analysis, Value Analysis & Value
Management. Started by Lawrence D Miles of General Electric
in 1961, VE is a process using Function Cost Analysis
and has a 40 year success story in reducing costs. The
technique called Function Analysis dramatically shifts
the viewpoint of the problem-solvers. When Miles conceived
VA in the late 1940s, its totally unique element and
the source of major break-through was Function Analysis.
Value Engineering, he stressed, should
be a natural part of any design project for this tool
satisfied customer demand for cost reduction and gives
options for improvement and better business relations
thereby providing an edge over competitors. These are
the benefits to be expected from Value Engineering.
Mr. Daga ended with thanks to CII Jamshedpur
office for extending support in making a success of
the seminar and offered the floor to Mr. Rattan, who’s
credentials make him one of the most informative persons
on the subject-14 years of hands on experience in managing
and improving shop floor activities in quality and productivity
excellence; hands on experience in using and implementing
modern practices and quality initiatives in TPM, TQM;
Value Engineering for Cost Effectiveness and ‘5S’,
are just some points that make him a suitable speaker.
